Nebraska/South Dakota Trip

The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, we woke up to the wind blowing terribly hard with all kinds of dust in the air. Andrew suggested we go somewhere to get away from the wind, but everywhere I came up with to go was windy according to the weather report online. All of a sudden Andrew says, "Let's go to Mount Rushmore!" At first I resisted because that was a long drive and we hadn't planned on going, but then I decided to give in. I'm always up for a road trip adventure! I hurriedly got us ready to go while Andrew made all our arrangements online and we were off! We drove about 6 hours that afternoon and stayed the night in Cheyenne, WY.

The next morning we crossed over into Nebraska because I wanted to check Nebraska off my list of states we hadn't been to yet and from there we headed north to South Dakota.

We saw so many antelope on our road trip.

After driving for about 5 1/2 hours, we arrived at Mount Rushmore Sunday afternoon and stayed for several hours doing everything there was to do there. I had been to Mount Rushmore once when I was about 14, but the visitor's center had changed a lot since then.

On of the things we did at Mount Rushmore was a half mile hike that took us up next to the mountain so we were able to get some close up views. Being so close we could see marks on some of the rocks from the dynamite that was used to blast off pieces of the mountain all those years ago.

Andrew wanted to be holding the mountain on his hand, but I didn't take the picture right. Oops! :(

Andrew tried some buffalo stew at the visitor's center cafeteria.

For my souvenir, Andrew bought me a pair of Black Hills Gold earrings. They were made by a company right there in Rapid City, SD.

Sunday night we spent in Rapid City, SD. We had dinner at LongHorn Steakhouse, which is something we don't have in Utah yet so we wanted to try it. Our hotel was this really cool Holiday Inn. I loved the atrium with its 60 foot waterfall and glass elevators. I wanted to spend all my time at the hotel just hanging out in the atrium. That's when Andrew started teasing me about all the pictures I was taking of it. ;)

Monday morning it was time for us to make the 10 1/2 hour drive back home. Ugh! We did stop for breakfast though in Deadwood, SD at a little casino called Tin Lizzie where they had a breakfast buffet. That was fun. :)

Back in Wyoming.

In Wyoming we stopped and stretched our legs for a minute at Independence Rock and Martin's Cove.

We were home by dark Monday night after a long drive. I was glad we went though. I love spur of the moment adventures like this!

  1. I think the picture of Andrew holding a head is still pretty awesome. Looks like you had a great time.
