Alaska Cruise Vacation Day 8 - Ketchikan

Friday we arrived in Ketchikan pretty early in the morning again. The guys had to be off the ship and on the dock by 6:30 a.m. and they were so excited because they were going halibut fishing! We girls had a rainforest sanctuary & lumberjack show excursion booked for 8:30 a.m. Around 7 a.m., I was in my stateroom getting ready for the day, thinking about the guys and wondering where they were and what they were doing at that exact moment, when Andrew walked back through the door. Turns out their halibut fishing excursion had been cancelled due to the weather and rough water. To say the guys were disappointed would be a huge understatement! They were, however, able to book to go on our excursion with us last minute and we were happy about that. :)

After meeting up with everyone at the appointed time and getting off the ship, we walked a few blocks over to the lumberjack show and got our seats. It was raining slightly, but it cleared up right before the show started and we had the best time! It was so fun to see the lumberjacks competing against each other with all their razor sharp saws and skills.

A bunny!

A bunny with "hair"!

Since the bunny's ears were "accidentally" cut off, they turned them over and used them for a little chair. So cute!

Two brothers from the audience were chosen to come down to sit in the chairs and then they got to take the chairs home. :)

After the show, we boarded a bus (with a driver who again was a USU student working in Ketchikan for the summer) that took us out to the rainforest sanctuary. Those who wanted could put a poncho on and then we set off on a guided walk. The rainforest walk was really interesting with all the moss and green plants and trees everywhere we looked. We also saw a 2 bear dens that were not in use at the moment and bear claw marks on some trees.

After the rainforest walk, we were able to feed some rescued reindeer. They were so excited to see us because they knew we had food!

Then we moved on to see an old saw mill. Since it's so wet in Ketchikan, the mill is now covered in moss.

We were also able to see a rescued owl and bald eagle.

We ended our time at the rainforest sanctuary by getting to see the very early carving stages of a totem pole, which was neat to experience close up.

Once back on board the ship, I did a little shopping. Since our ship was the Norwegian Pearl, I wanted pearl earrings to remember our trip by.

I love what I ended up with! They are kind of black and purple colored and I also love that they're not round.

At about 10:00 p.m. that night, our ship was having a chocolate buffet complete with ice sculptures so we couldn't resist going!

Tonight's towel animal was a monkey hanging from the ceiling!

  1. I'm still bummed the guys didn't get to go fishing. But it was fun to have them with us that day.
